Well, we have found out like most of the expats that if you want a TV the best option is to send it down. My wife and I have gone round and round on this issue and looked everywhere including Hipo! We are going to send a 47 inch LCD from the states via UPS and Jet box. We bought the TV a year ago for $750 a floor model. It will cost about 150.00 to ship economy. With the exemption for the taxes that will make the big difference. If I bought the TV in country it would be $2,000.

Most Ticos have found out about mailing company’s and with the twice a year exemption that is the way to go.

If you are looking in the Central Valley area Tres Rios is a great place. We live here and it is close to everything, Trea Mall is just down the road, San Jose by bus is 25 minn and mountains all over the place. In the last nine years or so this place has been growing and growing.

Yesterday My wife and I went to reopen our bank account and found out that there is a new law coming into affect soon that will require everyone including ticos to show where their income is coming from. They will have to update this yearly or the banks will close down your account. We had to show proof of where the money that we were depositing that day came from.

No I am not? Who are the developers? I have met a couple of Minnesotans that are building and developing but in the San Ramon area.

I am a Reservist but have been on active duty for the last seven years. During my activation I was all over the globe until I landed a spot with Southern Command in a Embassy. I will be retiring this December and living in CR.
I also sold real estate in Minnesota for 15 years but the last two or so I was starting to concentrate on CR. I was doing home buyers seminars in Minnesota and showing people how to retire here in CR. When it was time to renew my account with you it would not take my last log in name so I change to to what it is today.

My wife and I were going to drive with our three year old daughter. After extensive planning such as talking to all the RSOs in the route we decided not to. The only area that we were concerned with is the Mexico boarder. At this moment the Zetas are stopping cars along the toll roads…. Also after what happened in many of the boarder towns we said no way.

Once you get past the Mexico boarder…it is smooth sailing..

We are now in Houston, shipped our car and waiting for Friday to fly to Cr. Traveled from MN and moving perm to CR, with a Dog and Cat.

I didn’t mean for this to be a stand for good or bad of the system, its just that people have a different service if you are in the private hospital or the public. Tico’s such as my wifes family don’t have the choice to spend $3,000 for hospital charges.
Just don’t come to Costa Rica thinking it is the most incredible heaven on earth.
Like in the wizard of OZ, don’t look behind the curtain.

This may shed some light on the “why are the US Armed forces in CR”?

Of course, it’s the Venezuelan elections why didn’t I think of that…. Just like why we did Medcaps in Paraguay, for the water and the secret base!

all I can say is my son served with the Marine Corp on board the Iwo Jima..I talked to him yesterday and he told me that this was a regularly scheduled Carribean tour…not to worry and dont read anything into this..[/quote]

Yes I know, I just think its funny how people go crazy. These events take more than six months to plan and a lot of planning involved. 😀

And yes there are military members in Costa Rica 360 days out of the year. They are called Marine Guards that Guard your safe haven the Embassy..hahaha just had to throw that one in there..

Yes, we have done the foot work for the information about driving with the dogs and cats.

What we did was researched all of the countries and their laws regarding Pets. All of them require the international health inspection. Mexico requires it in Spanish and English,so you will have to get yours translated. You will have to get your rabies vac done 30 days prior your departure and you will have to have your international health cert no later than two weeks prior to departure.

We haven’t left yet! After doing some sitting and waiting for the boarder issues, we are now looking at taking a different path. Hopefully we will be down there around the second week of September.

We were going to drive down there with our dog and cat with our 3 year old daughter. So we have to take extra precautions and planning.

Well today we decided we might start looking at other options.
So we are going to start shipping our house hold goods and a car down to Costa Rica. Mexico is still to risky to drive with the family down. Its more than a 50/50 chance that you would get pulled over by the Zetas and not the police on the major highways from the boarder to Monterey. 🙁 So we decided to possibly forgo the road trip until next year if the situation gets better.

Today my wife and I were talking to some Mexican friends and they said we should be fine, just get across the boarder, get thru Neuvo Leon, get on the told road, get off of the roads before dark.

We might attempt this departure around the 15th or so.

Today we decided to wait another week to see how the boarder in Mexico is doing. I talked to the Regional Security Officer in Matamoros and he told me the best place to cross is still Nuevo Laredo because it is safer to stay on the toll roads. At this time even the RSO isn’t able to venture out in most areas. He did give me hope though saying that if you stay on the toll roads and drive during the day you shouldn’t have problems. The drug cartels are not randomly shooting people.
