1st if anyone is interested in moving to Costa Rica or any other country they should come down for a couple of months and rent a home. How can anyone make a life decision on a vacation for a week, or reading books and forms such as this one! If you cant take the time off than expand your time line and take all of your vactions to Costa Rica until you are for sure you want to make the big leap.

Most of the people that come to Costa Rica or any other country do eventually leave because they could not adjust to the culture. This is why it is important to test before you buy.

2nd dont buy property on a whim! Learn the laws and do the foot work yourself, don’t think that just because the people are so friendly and invite you into their home, tell their life story and give you their first born that they are your family. This is where many people have made the mistake and than they have squater on what they think is their land and it has been sold to many other people.

Currently I am living in Paraguay (looks like I will be living here for another year and a half), I have seen many Germans come here and hook up with a friend of mine and buy property. The first advise he tells them is to buy three airline tickets round trip, take each one and come to Paraguay for three weeks at a time, come down every three months and at the end if they really like it than purchase a home. This has worked because his ratio of people that stay are much higher than most other people. Most of the Germans are buying property and staying for the long run becuase they knew what they were getting into.

In your case you already put the cart before the horse, I would travel there every other month at the minimum and put a permemnt structrue on that property as fast as you can. Tell your friend it is nice that he looks at the property but tell him you will pay him a small amount for that service and have a contract signed showing he won’t have any rights to that property. Than I would go to the local community and make sure you name is on that title for that property with no other persons name!

I know that Costa Rica is a great place because of the people (Ticas) but even the Ticas and California realtors know how to pull the wool over your eyes! Its like here in Paraguay, its like Costa Rica because of the people. However if you busy giving them the shirt off of your back they will be reaching around to take your wallet.

Wow, that is the number 1 rule that you don’t do! Don’t trust someone that will say I will watch your land! In Costa Rica there is squaters rights and you can be had like thousands of others before you.
I am sure that you might feel like they are family but that is what many people said before they lost thousands of dollars.

    Phil13,

My wife and I have property in normal tico neighborhoods. My wife is a Tica and all of her family live in and around the San Jose area. My mother in-law lives around Tres Rios about a mile up from the mall going to Cartago. My wife was raised in San Jose right across from the old MOP. Now we are living in Paraguay!

What do you want to know about living in a normal Tico neighborhood? One thing is if you don’t have a shower head in your shower that can kill you, than you are not in a normal Tico home!!! hahaha Now adays when we go home we find a new gringos coming every year. This year I belive we have 3 or 4 gringos living in the area, when we first moved out there about seven years ago there was only one in a 3 mile radius.
