    [quote=”alexander69″]Hola,

    We are looking into being “off=grid” meaning total solar powered house and a well. If anyone has done this, and I will be shocked if no one has as ICE is a big pain in the ass, please let me know of your experiences. We are not going to give ICE 25,000 dollars to run poles to our home site and then turn around and give them the rights and land. It is absurd. Any solar experience is appreciated. Off=handed comments just to hear yourself ramble is not.

    Saludos,

    Good Day;
    I have a friend who started a Spanish School and Eco Hotel next door in Nicaragua and has gone completely off grid now. She has had some trials and errors and would be a good reference for the where’s, what’s and how’s of getting up and running. I am sure it would be much easier in Costa Rica than Nicaragua but probably would use same sources.

    She is a great lady and has started all of this after retirement (Boomer). I am sure she would be pleased to give you some advice. She has a website where you could contact here. http://mariposaspanishschool.com/

    Lot’s of opinions out there however when you start seeing interviews like this on Bloomberg you have to start taking a serious look at where your money is invested!

    I will be moving down soon and will be applying to be a pensionado. Are there any medical exams required for Pensionado application? How long will it take to get the Pensionado status confirmed? Can you join the CAJA as a Pensionado?

    I have friends that have done incredibly well the last six years that don’t understand the plight of the majority. It is their opinion that it’s “your problem” not theirs. They are so busy with their “lives” that they can’t see anyone elses much less care what is happening to our country. Their wake up call is coming.

    I live in Florida at the moment and the insurance premiums for Hurricane coverage is now as much as the mortgage payments on many homes here. We are talking 5 to 10 thousand dollars a year in premiums. Add to that the normal expenses and in my case Health Insurance and you realize that the future does not include retirement unless some drastic lifestle changes are made.

    Fascinating discussion thread. I must admit I linger in the background and very seldom participate in these discussions however I was born and raised in St. Louis and still have family living there. I left there many years ago when Bobby Kennedy was shot and haven’t been back since then with the exception of some funerals over the years. I find it very depressing when I must go there.

    I have been visiting Costa Rica for years and have good friends living there year round now so they keep me up to date on the real deal there. What is the real deal? Depends on your income basically same as in the States. Live with bars on your windows and doors or extend the perimeter and live behind the fences of a gated community. Applies to both areas.

    I will be moving to Costa Rica soon and know that I will have some things that I will have to adjust to but am eager to do that. What I know for certain is that what is happening to the middle class in America is unsustainable and some changes they are a coming!

    I stayed here on my last visit and thought it was great. Right on the beach with a Cococnut Grove for your yard.

    I agree with you that reading those articles is depressing. I visit Costa Rica frequently and have many friends living there now. My friends there have all been effected by theft at one point or another over the years so perhaps it is not such a bad idea to let the newcomers know that they should not think they can live quite so carefree and naive in Costa Rica. The crime is crime of opportunity but can still cause havoc if it involves your wallet or passport. Material items can be replaced easliy.

    Thanks for your replys. Maravilla I will assume you will not be working for the US tourism board anytime soon. I too love to visit Costa Rica and will be making my “big move” decision this year. Just still a little uneasy about all the ornamental iron work down there.
