I understand that the positive about Cocobolo is variety and that the trees are older and with better root systems than the usual vivaro. Comments?

Heading to Cocobolo Tree Farm next week for some harder-to-find fruit trees and pick up a Neem tree for a friend. Has anyone had experience with their trees?

Darn right, Scott! People are moving money out of the US for safety. Dollarizing sounds like a terrible idea for CR.

Haven’t run into this in CR but we were on a privately maintained road in upstate NY.

We handled it with a contract drawn among the people on the road binding us to meet annually and pay a portion of the cost of maintenance.

At the meeting, we also discussed and voted on road improvements costs of which were assessed per property.

The contract provided for recovery of funds if the property owner did not pay the assessed amount. We all signed the contracts when we bought the properties.

In your case, you would have to have current owners agree to a new contract – that is going to be problematic.

    Good Luck.

Your documents have to have an “Apostile” stamp – an international certification. This is something you can do in the States and I suggest it. We did not have the stamp and, since we had already moved here, had to hire a company in the States to finish the process. Expensive and time consuming. For Social Security, you need a letter from the embassy here certifying that you are receiving ‘X’ amount.

Wow. And we have a very good attorney! Our property is one corporation and had two houses when we bought it. We thought we were safe from the luxury tax. What a headache.

Thanks to both of you for the excellent information!

Would appreciate comments on the following:

We originally thought we would have to pay the luxury tax due to the price of our property. Our attorney told us that, because there are two houses on the property, we do not have to pay the tax. Essentially, the total value is halved, with 50% of the value applied to each house, so no luxury tax applies.

Only had two in the house – found one alive and one dead. Killed the live one… I don’t think they like crossing large expanses of driveway stones or tiles as there is no greenery and no place to hide. That may be why we have only seen two in the house.

Since they can get in under doors, a good suggestion was a screen door with a tight fit. We are planning on one.

I am having a terrible time growing sweet corn here in CR and my husband loves it. Anyone have suggestions?

(Don’t know if the seed is GMO and don’t care)

I am not dismissing the research, in fact I agree that an overdose of pesticides/constant uncontrolled exposure to pesticides causes problems. I just want the parameters of exposure. How long, how much, etc. Those answers are important to the conclusions.

[quote=”pharg”]This seems to be the de facto thread to expound on dietary opinions, and since there has been comment on the desirability or organic/nonorganic ag products, I thought I’d throw this in about pesticides. It just appeared in
the professional journal ‘Environmental Research’ (volume 120, pages 96-101, January 2013). One of the authors is C. Wesseling, from UNA in Heredia, and if you’re interested enough, you can try to contact this person for more details. The title of the research article is:
“Occupational pesticide exposure and screening tests for neurodegenerative disease among an elderly population in Costa Rica”.

A number of questions come to mind immediately. These are “elderly subjects”. When did they spray? What did they spray? What was the concentration of the substances sprayed? What was their exposure (did they wear protective clothing and masks, did they spray on a daily basis, etc.)? Until all those questions are answered, there is no way to even begin to suggest that this study has validity.

Aw shoot, I don’t want to ‘study’. I just want to hang out with my caretaker’s 7 year old son and pick up words from him. He is a very patient teacher with this old gringa.

Why would you want plastic? We have friends who brought rattan furniture from the States 10 years ago and it still looks terrific. The plastic ‘rattan’ I have seen is very expensive and looks far less durable than the real thing.
