I liked Prisma, but stay away from Meza Dental. With that in mind, anyone know how to file a complaint against a dentist in CR?

I agree that Dr. Mario is the best.

Repeating what my expert stated, AM Costa Rica reports: The European Food Safety Authority also found numerous problems with the French study, from not enough control rats to substandard analytical methods. And the French science academies said the release of the study, which coincided with the release of a book and a film highlighting the work, raised ethical problems.

At the University of California at Davis, toxicologist Alison van Eenennaam questioned the researchers’ motives.

“I think it was a cynical ploy to exploit the scientific process to create fear in the minds of consumers,” she says.

Terrific article and will do some research about it shortly. It does sound like a combination of factors – heat, dehydration, sugar, chemicals, physical stress – all contribute to the problem. he solutions would have to include a supply of clean fresh water, salt tablets, rotation of labor and shorter shifts, and protection from chemicals.

In the past, many workers in other parts of the world have responded to issues like this by organizing strikes. But who would feed their families and prevent outside workers from taking their jobs. Factor in the problem of political instability, and you have a real mess on your hands.

We have a dish – but not installed yet. In the interim, we are using Netflix and USTVNow.com. USTVNow is not the best quality, but we don’t watch a lot of TV so it is ok for now and can be upgraded. At least hubby gets his US football…whoopie.

    Good ol’ IRS.

We have a small finca here in CR and are planning on planting hundreds of harvestable trees over the next year, primarily rosewood (cocobolo), cedro, laurel, and perhaps a few mahogany (teak doesn’t grow well where we live). These trees take from 15-50 years to grow to harvestable size. Any trees harvested will be replaced with additional trees. Naturally, there will be expenses connected to the farm and we will list those expenses as deductions on our tax returns. The deductions will offset any monies we need to take from our IRAs. Let the IRS thugs figure that one out.

There is a free trade zone (I bet David knows where it is) and several builders I know go there and load up on appliances with solid brand names – GE, Amana,Frigidaire, etc. As I recall, you have to book an overnight stay in the zone, but friends say it is very pleasant. They deliver the appliances for a reasonable fee.

I heard that an American can fly to Cuba from CR and that the Cuban officials will kindly NOT stamp your passport when you arrive. True or CR myth?

Yup, crime is everywhere. We have an alarm system and a caretaker. And a nice big dog. And neighbors.

Sometimes, I think it is how you treat your Costa Rican neighbors too. If you are just-another-expat with no interest in being part of your local community, you may be at greater risk for crime. Just a thought. Anyone want to comment on the thought?

The biggie there is Bali furniture near the Ashley furniture store. Unfortunately, Bali’s stuff is very expensive and made of plastic! Plastic. It looks pretty, but its plastic. I hear that Sarchi has excellent furniture. I am having outdoor furniture made locally here near Lake Arenal by a local craftsman. It will be made of local woods and waterproofed. There are also places that will make you furniture of teak, which is probably the best for outdoor use.

With so many craftsmen around, I think that having what you want made to order is your best bet. Good luck 🙂

Remember reading at night as a kid; blanket over your head, flashlight in hand, all excited, feeling sneaky and ready to pretend to be asleep in case mom came in?

Now, I just read by the light of my Kindle. Nowhere near as much fun.

First, don’t attribute things to me that I did not say.

    Second, I don’t “believe”, I think.

Third, of course the videos played the emotional card – big bad corporation out to harm your family is emotional. Playing on fear is emotional. Science is fact.

Finally, this will be my last post on the subject. We will just have to agree to disagree.

I know that a lot of people choose the central valley for the convenience and shopping but the area around Lake Arenal has a remarkable climate and little crime. We don’t need gated communities to feel safe. Instead, we have neighbors.
