Stay away from a company called “U Save” when renting a car. They wanted to charge $55. a day for the “Mandatory” insurance. I had read up on this before hand and declined. They offered a second rate of $50. a day. The discussion got, well, heated. The clerk threatened to send us back to the airport. What is required? The lowest rate is about $14 a day and the premium insurance is about $20! We finally took the car for a week with (supposedly) NO insurance, which the clerk said was legal. When we looked at the bill later, she had charged us $13.99 a day for insurance.
What a scam she had going. Oh, this was at the Liberia airport.
VictoriaLSTMemberNO NO NO – very bad idea. Serious physical danger in Mexico and serious financial danger everywhere!!
VictoriaLSTMemberTry http://www.solutionscostarica.com. Charles Zeller had our container picked up at our home and transported to the departure port. Probably Tampa for you. He makes the arrangements. Nothing broken, bruised or lost in our shipment. It lands in Puerto Limon and goes to Alaguela for Customs, then gets sent right to your door in CR.
VictoriaLSTMember
It is absolutely NOT true, loraine, that 50% of Americans pay no federal tax. What 50% of Americans do not pay is federal INCOME tax. They still pay all the payroll taxes that everyone else who earns up to about $103,000 per year pay. Those who earn over that $103k threshold pay no additional payroll taxes. So the burden of payroll taxes, which are the flat taxes you so admire, fall most heavily on the poorest and exempt the richest.
Too, bear ion mind that rich and poor alike all pay the flat sales and use taxes that states and municipalities impose and the flat-rate state income taxes.
Any flat tax will, by its very nature, impact most heavily upon the poorest. Think about this . . . Any person, rich or poor, can only benefit from about 2,500 calories per day regardless of the source, whether that’s rice and beans or beluga caviar.
If you tax someone making (say) $20,000 per year at a flat rate of 22% (what Steve Forbes flat tax would actually require), they’re left with $15,600 to spend on food and other necessities. If you tax a person making (say) $200,000 per year at that same rate, they have $156,000 left to meet their caloric and other needs.
Do you see how a flat tax benefits the rich at the disadvantage of the poor? Whose needs are better met under the flat tax scenario, the rich or the poor? Which would you rather be?

Well, David, I guess you haven’t read “The Fair Tax” – or maybe you didn’t understand it. It does address all your points. Maybe reading it with an open mind would help?VictoriaLSTMemberYeah, I think we all set up corps for that reason. What a mess.
VictoriaLSTMemberAww shoot. Like, here I thought you were, like, a’gonna tell us like where to find, y’know, like drugs, man. Like, wow, disappointment. Like, a real downer, y’know?
VictoriaLSTMemberDoc gave me Augmentin (antibiotic) and something called Arcoxia and I feel human for the first time in 2 weeks.
Arcoxia is for arthritis and lower back pain (I was having pain in my lower back and legs and I do have arthritis). This morning I am pain-free for the first time in…well a long time. Arcoxia is not approved by the FDA for use in the States, but my husband, a PhD who was in medical research for 27 years, reviewed the information on it and said I should continue to take it for the week of the prescription. The FDA just rejected Merck Pharmaceuticals’ request for approval but the medication is sold in 63 countries. Nothing I have ever tried has worked this well or this fast. Look it up, check it our, ask your doctor.
VictoriaLSTMemberNice doctor. The answer? A different antibiotic, plus a second pill. Also that phrase we so “love” to hear: This time of year, there’s a lot of that going around. Made me feel right at home. LOL
VictoriaLSTMemberHey, didn’t say don’t file the form. Just fight it as we file.
David, where did you get the 6 million figure? I have been trying to figure that out myself.
And loud opinions are one thing, legal action is another 🙂
VictoriaLSTMemberI see the doctor at 1:30 today and will report back 🙂
VictoriaLSTMemberWow – I may have to drag hubby to the doc. But I thought that dengue had a high fever? I just can’t find anything that fits where the fever comes and goes like this (except malaria – now there’s a sad thought).
Thanks guys.
VictoriaLSTMemberCan I come too? Never been here in October, but if you say it is nasty……
VictoriaLSTMemberUp near Lake Arenal, we pay 1,200 colones an hour for our gardener. Our housekeeper asked for 1,000 colones an hour but we give her 5,000 for 4 hours – she is fantastic – and works twice a week.
As is true with people everywhere, our housekeeper and gardener appreciate small courtesies. When we found out she was walking over a mile to get here – on dangerous roads – we decided to pick up and drop off our housekeeper. We also paid her for the two days she did not work while we were in the US for a week.
VictoriaLSTMemberWe live near Lake Arenal and hire local workers for c1,200 to c1,300 an hour, although I usually throw in something extra. It may be more expensive in the central valley or on the coasts.
VictoriaLSTMemberThis is the first time I have mentioned it outside of a few friends for just that reason.
