You haven’t mentioned the Lake Arenal region. Admittedly, there is no Walmart, but, at the moment, I am enjoying bright sunlight and a cool mountain breeze. At night, the temperature is usually in the 60s – no A/C needed. 70s to 80s during the day. Our water bill is $7 a month (unlimited water). Nuevo Arenal has a large and active x-pat community. And lets not forget the lake. And the rivers. And the food!
VictoriaLSTMemberI am a diver and I would stay away from the Pacific at any time of the year due to silting and just currents stirring the bottom. How about a nice trip to the Carrib?
VictoriaLSTMemberOver five years ago, I suggested to some friends that the US government would, at some point, recognize that Social Security monies were leaving the country in every increasing amounts. At that point, someone would propose a “temporary” decrease of 25% in an individual’s SS payments if that person moved out of the country after “X” date. That decrease would later become permanent. Then it would become a 50% decrease. At some point, the individual would be denied any benefits if he/she moved out of the country. At the time I suggested it, people were astonished – although one friend said I shouldn’t talk about it (it might give the government ideas).
Once we allow our government to take away our property rights, our right to keep what we earn, we are on a slippery slope. Lets all hope the government loses this current battle,
VictoriaLSTMemberWelcome home 🙂
If you get tired of the heat, come up and visit us in Nuevo Arenal.
VictoriaLSTMemberWhen you are in the Nuevo Arenal area, try “The Gingerbread House” (they have a web page) for some of the best food in CR at very reasonable prices. The chef prepares food according to season, availability, and freshness – usually 4 or 5 choices for the main course, all of them wonderful. Dishes are served for two to share. The atmosphere is open and welcoming and the chef strolls the tables.

Stay away from USave. Low rental but they tried to clip us $50 US a day for insurance.

On a side note – having had 2 brain surgeries – MRI’s are safe, but CAT scans are not. Always request MRIs
An MRI used to be called an NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) – but they changed the name because people were afraid of the word “nuclear”. An MRI still uses radiation, folks.

A closet Gringo farmer living off the fat of the land. #160500VictoriaLSTMemberI think what we need is a site just for gardeners new to CR. I will be new to CR in about 4-6 weeks and can’t wait! We will be in the low hills on the NE end of Lake Arenal. There are some trees already on the property, but I love the idea of planting “sticks” and watching them grow. Here in Georgia, USA, I have been in gardening clubs for years but I am new to the tropics. Books are still coming in the mail, but I doubt if that is adequate preparation for the reality of CR gardening. We will soon know….. 😀
VictoriaLSTMember
Sounds great!
What made you choose the lake Arenal area after thee years of hunting?

The weather, the idea that tourists “pass through” and in small numbers, the amount of land we could have (they aren’t making new land – except in Iceland and Hawaii), the weather, the friendly x-pats we met constantly, the weather, that beautiful lake and the hills around it, the view from our new patio, the $40 a month in electric (!!!), the river and stream on the property, did I mention the weather?
VictoriaLSTMemberThank you all for your comments and wisdom. We have visited CR and we are planning on renting in different locations for a month at a time. We will probably start near Lake Arenal and move slooooooowly south. With so many climate zones and natural attractions, it may take us a while to decide on a location. I did like the idea of buying a car/truck instead of renting one and the ones mentioned all sound excellent.
Now if we could just sell our house in Georgia…. Anyone planning on a return to the states? Wanna trade??
VictoriaLSTMemberThanks guys. Since we would be setting up a home, I wonder if it is cheaper to buy in the US and ship things in. Then there is duty on everything, but……. This is more complicated than I would want, isn’t it?
VictoriaLSTMemberI wonder if the same rules apply if one is internationally certified in the drug and alcohol field?
