Agree with the last poster. 30 – 30 – 30% with the last 10% paid after a walk-through.
It is difficult to find out who the corrupt builders are due to defamation laws. Meet with local expats to hear the good things they have to say about their builders. We have friends who have paid for their house and can’t live in it due to all the problems but the builder has threatened them with a lawsuit if they mention his name. Its outrageous! We have to come up with sneaky ways of communicating which builder to use. Make a list of builders and just ask for “yes” votes?
VictoriaLSTMemberIn Nuevo Arenal, we have a weekly Thursday morning breakfast where you can meet dozens of local expats. 8 AM at Las Delicius restaurant near the center of town. For more info, send me a PM.
VictoriaLSTMemberLa Garita near the SJ airport is your best bet although there are a number of smaller nurseries located in the area.
VictoriaLSTMemberAw come on, lvc, the hike wasn’t that bad.:) And the drinks were terrific.
VictoriaLSTMemberIt seems to me that the damage done by Communist leaders of other countries in Central and South America has been caused in large part because they had an army they could control and with which they could exert considerable pressure on legislators. Would anyone like to comment?
VictoriaLSTMemberAnd now chided by Sweigie? Take me Lord, I’m ready LOL
VictoriaLSTMemberI wonder how much damage any politician can do in CR which has no armed forces. In the other nations cited, there has been an army to back up the politician’s actions.

The idea that there is a vast dependent class of Americans is a hugely exaggerated myth. The numbers of people drawing various government assistance (i.e., not Social Security) is tiny – as you can see here. The total on food stamps is available here.
Well, I clicked “here” and got the stats. So – do the numbers of ‘people’ getting welfare or food stamps….are those individuals or families? If, 46,000,000 get aid, how many children are they supporting on that aid?
VictoriaLSTMemberProbably the Carib coast, but I wouldn’t want to live there.
VictoriaLSTMemberWe came down in 2012 to look at a home in Jaco Beach. Result? Too hot, too humid, electric cost of $500 a month, the metal railings on homes 3 years old was already rusting due to the salt air. And too dang many tourists raising the prices of everything.
We drove up to Nuevo Arenal to see some property with a Realtor. After a total of 7 hours looking around, we bought a house. Electric about $90 a month, water $9, no heating, no A/C. Not much of a lake view, but enough. 11 acres of land, main house and caretaker’s home. Temps 65 to 85 year round. Huge expat community with lots of activities. Friendly neighbors. Group breakfasts twice a week. Stop in for a drink on our deck and have a long chat.
VictoriaLSTMemberCommended by Sweigert? I feel sooo much better about myself. LOL
VictoriaLSTMemberWell, Sweigie, I did some thoughtful research. A contract is still a contract….
But. When is a company not a company? It seems that “Infinito Mining” is not a mining company. It is a holding company with a share value of $0.005. No assets. Which means that it is probably just a front for a parent company that doesn’t want to take the risk of being sued.
So, thanks all for making me do real research. Infinito can still sue, of course, but it would be interesting to continue to delve into who owns this ghost company…..
VictoriaLSTMember

The Carib coast is, I am told, lovely. Also hot, humid and full of bugs. The Pacific coast is also hot, humid and buggy.
If you are thinking of retirement in CR, make sure you spend several days (or a week) in the Lake Arenal area. Temperatures 68-85 year round. No worries about air conditioning like there is on the coast where electricity can run you $500 a month. Water is cheap. There is a large and growing expat community and good medical care. This is becoming the best location for a new life in CR.
Don’t let the secret out…. I’ll never be able to get a table at Moya’s on Friday night!
And what if Gingerbread gets overcrowded!! YIKES! Ok, forget I mentioned Lake Arenal.
VictoriaLSTMemberPosting a reclamation bond of a couple billion would help with the “do evil and disappear” issue.
VictoriaLSTMemberI support the gold mining company. They had a legal contract. CR has a huge nation debt and resources in gold. The government can set up its own rules for reclamation and reforestation of the land when the gold mining is completed.
