The Carib coast is, I am told, lovely. Also hot, humid and full of bugs. The Pacific coast is also hot, humid and buggy.

If you are thinking of retirement in CR, make sure you spend several days (or a week) in the Lake Arenal area. Temperatures 68-85 year round. No worries about air conditioning like there is on the coast where electricity can run you $500 a month. Water is cheap. There is a large and growing expat community and good medical care. This is becoming the best location for a new life in CR.

The land exit tax is $5. What is worse is that Panama is now requiring a return ticket, not to CR, but to the country that issued your passport.

And now I am hearing that even with a provisional number and a CR license, you have to cross the border every 90 days. Will this nonsense ever end?

Cocobolotreefarm.com – the farm is near Liberia and the trees are terrific. Lots of things you can’t find elsewhere.

“Lawyer” is one of the least trusted of all occupations.

    So what do we do?

37% of our congressmen are lawyers; 57% of our senators are lawyers; our president is a lawyer.

How could things possibly go wrong in Washington?

If we were coming to CR from time to time for vacation or an extended stay, we would probably have chosen a condo or gated community. After all, if your home is going to be vacant you need extra security.

But we aren’t visiting; we live here. We have a small farm, a fine caretaker, and nice neighbors. We joined the Tico community, support the local school, treat people with respect. We expect occasional problems and we know the police aren’t efficient.

Good luck with your choices. We made ours.

Yup – the boric acid mix is terrific. To see some natural solutions to leaf cutter ants, try the Facebook page for Arenal Gardeners.

Mix about 1/3 boric acid with 2/3 grape jelly and spread about 1/2 teaspoon out in spots where you have seen ants. Its amazing. They will gobble it up, go home, and die.

No different light. If we can avoid killing birds and bats, perhaps we should. We will continue to require housing and power lines. But there are alternatives to wind power.
