Ok, my gigantic knowledge base and source of infinite wisdom…..
Is there a sure-fire way for a TICO to get a VISA to go to the States just to go to Disney or some other touristy thing, for a short period of time?
Why has our State Department made things so hard for TICOs?
Am I missing something, and do any of you have any wisdom, you wouldn’t mind sharing?
Thanks as always guys!!
The state dept has records of the lines of US citizens looking for help getting temporary passports, licenses, credit cards etc due to the smiling, helpful ones lifting them of the burden of carrying all that stuff around.
Naturally much of this happens at the beaches so they must also head to the paradise that is the Central Craphole ๐ to get this done.
September 12, 2014 at 1:59 pm in reply to: A different approach/Question about Tico’s VISA to the US. #167013VmcMemberJessica, if I may ask…What documentation did they actually want FROM HIM?
..AND thanks for the reply!
And P.S. was there a fee?
I don’t have any particular wisdom to impart, but I can share my experience from last year when I accompanied a male family friend to the US Embassy for his visa application/interview.
We didn’t think that I’d be able to attend the actual interview part because we’re not a couple. He is male, I’m female, but I’m married (he is one of my husband’s best friends in CR). He went to the window alone, but a guard came to get me & I was allowed to approach the window. The attendant asked him a few questions but spent most of our time together asking me, in English, why I was there to help him & seemed to just want confirmation of the few things she had asked of him (how long I’ve known him, where he works, for how long, etc.). Before I knew it, he was told his passport would be ready in however many days & I didn’t even realize he had been approved!
Maybe my friend would’ve gotten the visa without my help, but he doesn’t think so & I’m not so sure, either. I watched people being turned away left & right & I don’t think there is any rhyme or reason to how that is decided.
My friend had me write what was basically a letter of recommendation for him in English that I translated to Spanish. He had another letter of recommendation from another gringo couple written in English. The Embassy lady never even looked at those.
Bottom line, I have no idea how they made the decision to grant him his visa. But it worked! Of course, now everyone in the small town he lives in thinks I’m able to magically make visa approvals happen so I have all kinds of invites to the Embassy now!

August 30, 2014 at 9:45 pm in reply to: Americans and Ticos traveling for short stays in Cuba…What is required? #160721VmcMemberI need to go to accompany a Tico with a sort of medical emergency, and nothing more…..we’re TRYING to accomplish this in the States, but the process is more retarded than the Bozo in the White House.
August 30, 2014 at 6:36 pm in reply to: Americans and Ticos traveling for short stays in Cuba…What is required? #160717VmcMemberDavid, I THINK I understand what you are trying to say there….YES, as an American it is illegal to travel to Cuba, FROM U.S. soil, but not illegal to travel there. (If I understand correctly)
I guess my only other question is what is required of a TICO to travel there?
And here’s the REALLY dumb question….What currency is most widely used there?
VmcMemberHey guys, I’m trying to help a friend find out what duties would be on a vehicle she wants to bring in….I have heard mention of someone who can, taking the vehicle info, make a fairly close estimate of the duties, can someone help me out here, or point me to who can?
Gracias siempre!

I remember your horror stories about the conditions in Playa Negra, and sorry to hear about your personal trials.
Thanks Bill, it’s been a tough time….I’ll survive, but it’s hard.
VmcMemberBill the “Get Married” thing was said in jest, and to answer your question, more or less, I am now alone in Costa Rica…It’s a tale I will reserve, but I’ll just say, “Things Happen” after 18 years together, we are no more…..I was asking about the Visa because a friend wants to come and see Disney and stuff, and I am just trying to find out how ridiculous the process is.
Oh, and as for the move from Playa Negra….We trusted a friend and moved there sight-unseen only to find that the house was NOT as we were told, and the conditions were less than bearable….I’m not prone to flights of fancy or instability if that is what you are trying to ascertain. ๐

Wow…thanks guys….I wonder if I got MARRIED if it would help…LOL
VMC, I thought I remembered this on your profile, so I went back to check & see – and yep, at least that part of my brain is still working, because it is right there ….”I am married to a wonderful girl a little younger than I, and we now have our first Grandchild…How did this happen, I was just 18 the other day?”
I also recall that you don’t allow much dust to settle in your tracks – You excitedly moved from the states to Playa Negra (couldn’t wait to get there), then after a week or two you up and moved to the mountains – so have you moved on in your marital relationship as well? If not, how could you get married again?
VmcMemberWow…thanks guys….I wonder if I got MARRIED if it would help…LOL

Just to obtain a Costa Rican passport is quite fast and easy for a Tico…but if their intent is to try for a US visa, then that is a whole different kettle of fish…and not cheap.
What is involved for a US visa to visit the States say, for a week or two…..Any idea?
Thanks to the Bush administration the process to obtain a visa to visit the States takes about two years. ๐ฅ
I don’t know what the cost might be.
VmcMember
Just to obtain a Costa Rican passport is quite fast and easy for a Tico…but if their intent is to try for a US visa, then that is a whole different kettle of fish…and not cheap.
VmcMember
go to trip advisor and see what they have. as i remember there were lots of nice places, not too expensive, to stay in. i chose the Vivaldi because it had the longest swimming pool in granada, and that was about $75 a night but i split that with my g.f. there are plenty of places cheaper than that, tho. i remember looking at the Posada del Sol which had apartment type accommodations in a really nice historic building on the main walking street.
Trisha, I started a thread, so I don’t bog down this one, but thanks for the info…I have other minor questions that can be found in that thread if you wouldn’t mind checking there…I’m sorry I sort of Hijacked this thread…..
VmcMemberAND/OR What does it take to extend your Visas and can you extend them for a shorter period, say a week or two, rather than 90 days?
The trip would be easier in light of the heavy initial bleeding we had to do when we got here, if we could just delay by about a week or two.
Any suggestions or flames available? LOL
Dan.
