Remember there are also regulations on size of animals and number of animals allowed per flight. If you need to bring the dog under the plane, look into Continental’s PetSafe program it was perfect for us.

    Thanks for that link!

I was never a proponent of Walmart in the US, but Hipermas, particularly the new one in Escazu is such a lifesaver. I spent months looking for some things that they have regularly in stock.
There are some great new stores making life more affordable and manageable here. I love the store “Play” in Paseo de las Flores. They have such good sales on electronics especially on small things the prices are close enough to US price that I don’t bother having people bring things down anymore!

I could not agree more. This will be a huge change in lifestyle for you and you need to be sure it’s for you.
I had spent years here before making the move and even with that much time here I have found it is not for me… Tickets on Spirit and Continental are cheaper than they have been in almost 5 years – I am going back to the US twice in the next month and both sets of tickets were under $250/each. That’s a tiny investment if you think you want to move here and potentially spend the rest of your life here

Maybe I have been lucky, but we have had amazing luck with lawyers. I am not sure if I am able to post their info here, so Scott please delete if it’s not allowed, but for real estate work I have used FirstCr.com and they are spectacularly organized and professional.
For everything else I use a woman in Heredia Lorena Arrazol, email me for her contact info.

It depends upon what you’re looking to do here.

If you are looking to get rich, it seems that you might have a lot of work ahead of you. But, if you are looking to take that 400k and use it to create a business that will allow you to live here with minimal expenses and have most of your costs covered by the business that’s another story- We have a BnB that we put a little more than that into, but it is producing plenty of money to cover all of our expenses and allowing us to put quite a bit away. It won’t make us rich, but it is a steady business.

I think the same can be said for many businesses here, including real estate, tourism etc. I know a ton of young people working in real estate, while they are not clearing 100k/year they are definitely living comfortably.

If you are looking to make the move here permanently maybe you chould consider working with a real estate company, and using some of that capital to buy a house that needs work.

Working in real estate might help you find properties and potential projects that you might not have found otherwise-

My wife and I just had a child here, and there are some things that you will miss. In most areas, you won’t be able to just go out for a stroll with the baby since there is not that feeling of suburbia that is so clearly felt in the US. There are also some things- albeit not critically important thing, but toys games etc. that you simply cannot get here, and will have to/want to bring in. Some aspects are wonderful about raising a child here, but you need to go into it with open eyes.

Does this apply on night flights? I thought all you needed was for it to be under 85?

It is a backup unit- but gives you 400watts for 1 hour.
Or, when running 2 lamps with 4 efficient bulbs- totalling ~30 watts, I can gets over 10 hours!

We picked up this Xanrex XPower 400watt from Pricemart for ~75,000 colones, and it power lights, a 19″ TV and my laptop for about 6 hours…
It’s amazingly worth it, it automatically kicks in so you wouldn’t know you lost power except for that it beeps really loudly
