We are from Canada as well and are in the process of completing our plans to build a house in the Portrero area. We are currently living in Flamingo. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to discuss our project and get more information regarding your experience with construction in this area.

    Thanks

    Thanks

I paid the marchamo in person at the INS office and they were OK without the passport.

    I appreciate your reply.

I found out that if you miss the December deadline you have to pay in person at the INS office. Life is good again.

I will definitely pay it on line in the future.

    Thanks for your assistance.

Thanks so much for your detailed reply – it was very helpful. I purchased a Toyota Lancruiser Hardtop privately, after checking it out thoroughly, and am very happy with the vehicle. It was relatively easy to accomplish with the assistance of a lawyer and I would not hesitate to do it again.

    Regards

Try RDS Construction http://www.rdscostarica.com Contact: Victor Salazar, Project Manager (fluent in English) 506 667 0931 in Costa Rica. RDS is just completing a large 8 floor luxury condo project at Jaco (next to the Holiday Inn) and they have many projects underway in the Nosara area. They are also affiliated with a drywall company. We are in the process of starting the construction of our home using RDS. After talking to many builders, we selected RDS for their innovative and technically competent engineering and construction staff. They are likely not the cheapest builder in CR, but after checking their references and viewing their completed projects they do have the capability to build a fine house on schedule.

    Good luck with your project.

We have visited Costa Rica 7 times (from Canada) and never had any shots of any kind. Hep A can be contracted anywhere, from someone that is carrying the disease and there was a recent case here in Canada where a worker in a local restaurant passed on the disease to patrons. Hep B is transmitted through body fluid contact, such as blood contact or intercourse.

Although I would agree that these innoculations are not necessary, the shots are not expensive and can be administered in as little as three weeks. May be a safe bet.

    Hope this helps.

I have used an RBC Card in Costa Rica ATM’s (mostly Banco BCR) and have had no problems. At BCR you can select a withdrawl in Colones or US Dollars.

Interestingly, I have found that I get a better exchange rate by using a Visa Card for purchases in Costa Rica than the bank gives me for direct cash withdrawls from the ATM.
You may want to check this out with your bank before you leave.

Check with your hotel as many hotels will arrange to have a car brought directly to the hotel for you. There are plenty of car rentals agencies in Liberia (near the airport) and I would highly recommend Toyota Rent a Car there from personal experience. I have rented with them seven times. Their vehicles are in great condition, the staff are excellent, and I even had an accident claim once which was handled swiftly and painlessly – the true test. Hope this helps.

I would highly recommend that you buy now. I am from Canada as well and purchased property in Guanacaste four years ago, when the Canadian dollar was at $0.72 U.S. I have seen the value of our property triple in the past few years, even with the exchange rate climbing to the $0.95 range today. To take advantage of the exchange rate, we are now planning to commence construction of a house on the property this year.

    Good luck!
