One of our VIP Members wrote to me last week concerned about the number of “hookers” that she heard were operating in a few bars in one of the fast growing beach towns here in Costa Rica – Jaco.

And don’t worry! I was joking about the photographs being included.

While some may complain about the availability of “hookers” or drugs it’s easy to understand why these services are available, it’s a simple case of supply and demand.

Where there is a demand, someone will step in and supply what’s in demand and it would appear that these services have been in demand since our time on earth began.

We contacted a number of people who live and work in the area to confirm what we thought was true.

They told us that “at least 80% of the hooker’s customers in those bars are not locals, they’re Gringos.” He added that “99% of the people that purchase drugs on the street are not locals. Locals are buying drugs but they are not buying the over priced drugs that are on the street.”

Another added that the “majority of men who buy these gals for a few hours are married Gringos“. Clearly they are not the ones complaining about the number of hookers available…

“The good news is that they are adding more and more police every year to help with the crime and to keep the streets clean. As in every city there are areas where you can purchase drugs or get hookers. The key is to keep it just to those areas and not let it run rampant through the city. I think they are doing a good job with this.”

They do say that it’s the world’s oldest profession and although being a pimp is illegal in Costa Rica, prostitution is not.
