Lured by the prospect of un-crowded waves and the adventure of visiting my first foreign country, I traveled to Costa Rica in 1992 where we surfed the Central and Southwest Coast.

I had always heard about the great breaks of Guanacaste but it was not until 1994 when I had the chance to surf there. Offshore winds every day groomed perfect point and beach breaks.

At 23 and having grown up on the East Coast, this was the best surf I had ever experienced. Every day I was treated to pumping 4-8 foot swells, and we must have spent 8 hours through multiple sessions paddling until our arms literally gave out.

What a great feeling and the kind of experience that every surfer longs for. After staying in Tamarindo for my first few trips I kept finding myself driving back and forth to Playa Negra, Avenellas, and Marbella because it was so much more consistent, less crowded and the people were great.

I eventually found Junquillal, a charming beach town with a barreling beach break and only 5 minutes from the epic right-hander, Playa Negra. After several years of staying and surfing here, I was presented with an opportunity to purchase a 220 acre parcel of land, and with the help of 2 partners we built our dream community: www.tierrapacifica.com which was completed in 2005.

The community has 74 lots (ranging between 1 and 3 acres), 7 condos and a commercial center with grocery store and restaurant. The project is now 90% sold out.

In 2010 I married Julie and in 2012 we decided before children that we would take a trip around the world. As you can imagine, my surfboard was the most important piece of luggage.

We visited over 30 countries, 16 of which I was able to enjoy the surf. On the back-end of the trip after visiting the Galapagos, we stopped by Tierra Pacifica for a week. The weather was perfect, the waves were pumping, no one was around and the water registered a balmy 85 degrees.

I had breaks from around the globe fresh in my mind, yet it was still easy to see why I had fallen in love with Costa Rica and why I kept returning.

Looking back on the conversations I had with other surfers from all over the world during my trip, it was interesting to realize how many people still have not surfed Costa Rica and that’s something we hope to change.

In addition, while there are many great breaks, very few places offer the ability to enjoy flora, fauna and a diverse range of adventure activities like Costa Rica. This allows your family to have as good of a time as you are.
