Please! Just tell me, how much does it cost for the dental treatment I need?

That question is repeated thousands of times from frustrated dental patients trying to figure out if everything not nailed down will have to be sold on a internet auction site to pay for their dental work.

The only problem is that the receptionist is paid NOT to give you an answer but rather to talk you to the point of exasperation until you have no alternative but to make an appointment for the expensive ‘office visit’.

Did what I just wrote make sense to you?

In the era of ‘free trade’ one business model which is definitely not consumer friendly is that of the US dentist.

It’s as if every US dentist has somehow has agreed, either by a unconscious suggestion implanted at medical school or perhaps a mind-thought inculcated by a secret medical society or perhaps, via some kind of inherited genetic DNA, that dentists are born predisposed to not giving prices, is that possible?

I suppose if you could go to a dentist back in the ‘olden days’ when the cost of dental work did not require a finance company ie a good credit score to fix your kids crooked teeth or a second mortgage (no longer an option), it was not an issue.

But today with most Americans fighting just to keep body and soul together it is information that is critical.

What’s even worse is that it is a reflection of an industry that is so committed to protecting its own interests that it has voluntarily disassociated itself from the day-to-day economic struggle that most of their potential clients face.

The US dental industry has decided that protecting itself from fair economic competition is more important than the dental health of a great majority of its fellow citizens.

Those few dentists that voyage outside this unwritten code are considered as traitors, or as the French would say ‘agente provocateurs’… in Georgia we call them troublemakers.

Try it! Call a few dentists in your area and ask for the price of say, a root canal or bridge, or better yet an implant.

You probably will be put on hold and after what would seem to indicate a honest attempt to have the question answered – BTW what happened to a price list? – the receptionist slash information black hole, will return and ‘suggest’ you schedule an appointment and the doctor will be happy to tell you… for $175 (prices may vary depending on whether the second home has a pool or not), what the cost ‘looks’ like.

If you play by their rules you will have to schedule four appointments at $175 each, give or take, to get competing quotes for your dental work. That comes to, uh, lets see, about $700 and from here the costs ‘looks’ like it has ‘unaffordable’ written all over it, not to mention you just paid two car payments to find out.

I want to write clearly and unambiguously, that good dental work performed by a better-than-average dentist, and believe me all dentists are not created equal, is worth every penny at a fair price.

That is what the real question is. Where can I find a fair price?
