Why Are Cars in Costa Rica So Expensive?
We asked Costa Rica Tax Expert Randall Zamora why cars are so expensive in Costa Rica and here’s what he said:
“The main reason why cars are so expensive in Costa Rica is the high import duties. Here’s what happens when we look at the numbers…
- The government’s tax department adds up the cost of the new car.
- They add the cost of shipping that new vehicle to Costa Rica.
- Plus the cost of insuring that car while it’s being shipped to Costa Rica and then…
- The government adds 53% to come up with the basic ‘cost’ of a new car in Costa Rica.
- The car dealer then has to add enough of a margin for him to make a profit selling that car.
Of course if the buyer needs financing to buy the car, there will be additional expenses because the financing costs are also much higher here than they are in the USA and in Canada.”
Our more observant VIP Members will notice that Porsche and Ferrari are not included in the list above and yes we have numerous other $100,000+ cars here and although it’s hard to believe, I see DOZENS and I do mean mean dozens – of $100,000+ cars every single day around the Santa Ana area!
