How Trash In North Carolina Led To Pura Vida Living in Samara, Costa Rica
I remember as a kid spending my summers in North Carolina with my father, kayaking down the Green River, rainbow trout fishing in the local stream near my fathers’ house, visiting Grandma for lunch, and taking home all of her delicious pies, cakes, and assortments of powdered sugar treats.
I remember waking up every morning and going to work with him six, sometimes even seven days a week. He had started his own refuge and waste removal business, and was doing well with it.
The business demanded long hours, and really just blue collar hard work. It certainly wasn’t something he enjoyed doing. I mean who enjoys throwing trash for a living?
There was a demand and he seized the market at that particular time. I always wondered why he sacrificed those years of his happiness to try and get ahead. I know why now.
He had visited Costa Rica before on several different occasions. He was an avid surfer that grew up on the shores of Bradenton, Florida, and had always dreamed of living in a tropical paradise.
No matter what it took, no matter the sacrifice, he was going to find himself sipping cocktails on the beaches of Latin America. His last surf trip back in the late nineties was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
It was his annual Costa Rica surf trip tackling the back, then almost impassable, coastal roads. One afternoon he woke from a nap and looked out the car window at Playa Carrillo. He informed his surf buddies to stop the car immediately.
As they pulled to the shoulder my father reached for the map and discovered they were just outside of a little fishing community known as Playa Samara. He had found home!
