I Am Proud of the Costa Rican People
I don’t ever wish to see my white haired mother lying on the pavement with a bloodied mouth screaming in pain ever again…
But it was when the ambulance turned on the sirens and flashing lights and sped away that I started to get really scared.
Thankfully, she is recovering from the fall but the bitter sweet memories that remain are of Paola, a perfect stranger to our family, kneeling on the hard pavement supporting my mother’s head as she lay there, and Gina who rushed out from her house with a bottle of water and offered of help and there were others…
Families stopped their cars, blocking traffic and offered to take her to the hospital but these two women, more like little angels, sensibly encouraged us to wait for the ambulance to take her accompanied by her husband of 50 years to Hospital CIMA.
These wonderful Costa Rican women also insisted on having my telephone number so that they could call and find out how she was… At the time, I thought that they were just being polite.
I am proud to know the Costa Ricans. I am proud of their compassion, their caring and sincerity and I am honoured and oh! So very grateful that they have allowed me to live as a guest in their beautiful country.
Later that night, I did indeed receive telephone calls from Paola and Gina both genuinely relieved to know that my mother was in good hands…
Me encanta Costa Rica – I really love Costa Rica.
PS. Whilst awaiting outside the emergency room at Hospital CIMA, an extremely tall American gentleman, feeling vulnerable and stressed out as his darling wife had broken her ankle in three places said to me; “You know I’m from the US and there is no way we would have received this level of care and service back home.”
