I’m feeling “lucky” today … In fact, in spite of some occasional “surprises,”
I feel lucky most days living here in Costa Rica which for me even after 12
years, is still a wonderland of stunning scenery, sunshine and smiles.

But have you ever questioned why some people are “lucky’ and others are
not?

I wholeheartedly agree with President Thomas Jefferson who said: “I am a
great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of
it.”

Benjamin Franklin said: “Diligence is the mother of good luck” and Ray Kroc, who helped build McDonald’s into the corporate behemoth it is was fond of saying: “Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more you sweat, the luckier you get.”

Although I don’t believe they knew each other…

People often tell me I’m “so lucky” to live in Costa Rica and I can’t help
but think to myself that well yeah! I’m certainly “lucky” to be living in
Costa Rica after working 10-18 hours per day for the last 36 years and
although I still work hard, I love what I do here and it’s always sunny…

The same applies to you and your plans to live and perhaps retire in Costa
Rica. People don’t enjoy a happy retirement in Costa Rica because they are
“lucky,” they enjoy a happy retirement because they worked hard, they
planned and prepared for it and then they took action, they moved here
and they continue to prepare – to learn Spanish – to enjoy their new lives …

As my Sergeant Major used to scream: “Always Remember the 7 ‘P’s – Proper
Prior Planning Prevents Pathetically Poor Performance!” He actually used a
different ‘P’ word in there and always multiple ‘F’ words but we’ll leave that
your imagination …

The traditional concept of “retirement” has never made much sense to me…
I’ve seen too many people who have “retired” and who now seem to sitting
around just waiting to die…. Yeeeew!

It may be a tad optimistic but I joke with my gal that as long as I’m healthy,
I’d like to live until I’m 100 years old and then only die AFTER we’ve finished
making love… Vamos a ver!

Moving to Costa Rica is an opportunity for you to reinvent yourself and
like any other major, life changing project you need take it seriously,
you make your plans, you prepare carefully and if you end up only half
as happy as I am, you too will be very “lucky!”
