This year our company decided to support a great charity event hosted by the legendary surfer, Robert August.

Over this past weekend we participated in the Surf contest at Playa Avellanas and the Golf Tournament at Hacienda Pinilla. The awards ceremony was held at El Vaquero at Witch’s Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo.

We came in a respectable 2nd place and really had a blast supporting a great cause. Team Blue Water consisted of Rob Goodell, Steve “Conejo” Torres, Jarrod Guidry, Mike “Grandpa” Clifford–all locals who live in the area!

A little history of the Robert August “Surf n Turf”

Many people credit Robert August for putting Tamarindo on the map. Robert August was the star of a 1960’s feature movie called the Endless Summer.

The producers of the sequel, Endless Summer II (produced in the 90’s) followed Robert August down to Costa Rica. Over the years with the time they spent here, Robert and friends built strong friendships, became closer to the community and felt they wanted to give back somehow.

One year when Robert returned with the cast to film Step into Liquid, they came up with the concept of raising money for the community and what better way than to do what they love to do most — Golf and Surf in paradise!

Some 13 years later Robert has generated over $200,000 worth of fundraising efforts for: the Orphanage of Santa Cruz, Costa Rica (Patronato Nacional de la Infancia or PANI), The Grammar School at Villa Real Costa Rica, The Lifeguards of Tamarindo, and the past six years CEPIA. CEPIA is a local non-profit group which supports the underprivileged youth of Guanacaste.

There were a total of five teams of four persons each that participated in the 13th Annual Surf & Turf competition this year.

Over the weekend of March 30th contestants participated at the surf break in front of Lola’s Restaurant in Avellanas and on the golf course at Hacienda Pinilla.

As opposed to traditional surfing contests, teams paddled out together and rooted each other on. The combined scores from the surfing and the golfing were averaged out to come up with the winner. Those who participated in this great event will have lifelong memories! There was live music, a silent auction, salsa contest, and a dinner cocktail party at the Diria Resort.

Thousands of dollars were raised for CEPIA and the children of Guanacaste.
