Please forgive the slightly spicy language but I’m trying to keep the true flavour of the Spanish translation.

The Spanish language used in Costa Rica is steeped with a variety of expressions (dichos) that conjure up images of years gone by and a more basic, agrarian way of life …

One fascinating expression: “Jallan más un par de tetas que un par de bueyes” refers to how “a pair tits pull more than a pair of oxen.”

In the old days a man who owned oxen would have been a “wealthy” man because he had oxen that could pull heavy loads and he would be considered quite a catch for a woman
looking for a husband.

However, according to this expression, a woman’s breasts have more pulling power than a pair of oxen and one only has to look at the newspapers, TV or any other advertising to see that there are indeed less oxen featured than “un par de tetas.”

The more things change the more things stay the same….
