Living Healthier in Samara: A charming beach town offering a holistic lifestyle.
As more folks look to their own lifestyle choices as a means to improve their health, Samara abounds with diverse options to facilitate this movement toward a healthier existence.
More and more people are beginning to truly understand the importance of stress free lives, regular exercise, and proper eating as a way to live a longer, healthier life with fewer medicines or invasive procedures.
In Samara, a destination still often unknown by many visitors to Costa Rica, you have the choice of at least four spectacular beaches within five minutes of each other. Whether it is morning walks, surfing, swimming, boogie boarding, beachcombing or other types of exercise you seek, you will find it here.
Beginning in December, each Friday there will be a Farmer’s Market day where you can find organic produce, meats, locally made cheeses, breads, jellies, and much, much more.
In the morning, Café Carola hosts a market from 7-12 and in the afternoon the market is at the Natural Center in the middle of Samara from 3-6 pm. For this season, there will be classes on preparing delicious raw foods, vegetarian cooking, composting, recycling, lifestyle options and much more.
On December 1, Samara Organics will open an organic grocery and café full of goodies that are often hard to find here in Costa Rica like; raw local honey, noni juice, cold processed coconut oil, and many other locally made and primarily organically produced options for the health conscious and those eager to learn more.
Other locally made products will include lip balm, bug bite salves, lotions, toners, and much more. There will also be a health fair and artisan market on December 10 in downtown Samara. More to come on this later…
Samara also has a growing expatriate community of North Americans, British, Spanish, French, Italian, and Germans – many with a “green” consciousness. Just the same, Samara remains largely Tico and the locals and expats mix well keeping the local culture alive and well represented.
Many of the folks that invest here do not wish to be surrounded by gringos but instead seek an integrated community where they can be immersed within the local culture. Samara is the ultimate laid-back Tico beach town – big enough to have most of what you need yet small enough to know most everyone you pass on the streets.
The types of people attracted to Samara are those concerned about health, exercise, clean food and water and value their role of stewards of a beautiful land. They are in tune with staying in good physical shape, eating well, and working towards a healthier lifestyle.
More and more folks are coming to Samara, from all age groups, and buying property or starting a business. Samara is just beginning to blossom and yet already offers so much along with its small community feel.
We are also seeing cross-generational families of parents and adult children opening businesses or young families wanting a different experience for their children.
Samara also boasts a massage school that runs the entire year and locals and visitors benefit from massages offered to the public at ridiculously low rates ($10 per hour for locals/$25 per hour for visitors). You can also enjoy a massage right on the beach.
Dr. Sheel Tangri (www.kinesiologist.eu ) is a practitioner of the healing arts who combines chiropractic with a specialization in applied kinesiology, naturopathy, and energy techniques into his approach toward wellness.
The community also has two raw food specialists that are full time residents that will offer classes to the public this upcoming high season.
In addition to its language curriculum, the Samara Intercultura Language School offers salsa dancing, local Tico cooking classes, yoga classes, and many other extracurricular activities that all age groups enjoy taking advantage. The community also offers yoga and weight loss retreats and there are plans of one or possibly two wellness centers slated to open within the coming year.
With schools for Spanish, massage, teacher certification for English as a Second Language, local artists and art galleries, Samara is a mellow community with a tranquil vibe that continues to attract healers and those seeking alternatives to western medicine while expanding its healthy organic and locally produced offerings.
Community education and multiple opportunities for involvement encourage all to participate and appreciate the many wonders of Samara. You owe it to yourself and your family to spend some time in Samara. You may never leave!
