I have been living and working in Costa Rica for over ten years.

It was only after returning from my most recent trip to Los Angeles that I truly began to appreciate the lovely ladies of Costa Rica. Los Angeles, like any major metro city, is rife with North American women who seem confused, aloof and altogether unhappy about life.

By comparison, Costa Rican girls are among the sweetest, most accessible ladies I’ve met during my travels. I’ve come to the realization that they play a very large role in why I choose to live here. What’s so great about Costa Rican women?

Well, if you don’t already know yourself, here’s my top 10 list of reasons to love Ticas.

10. No Nonsense: Ticas don’t mess around or play complicated mind games, they’re pretty simple human beings. That’s not to say simple = unintelligent. They just know what they want.

9. Femininity: I don’t know when it became so unhip for American women to act, well…like women. Costa Rican females are totally unashamed to be sexy, feminine and beautiful. What’s wrong with that?

8. Directness: Even though raised in a strict Catholic environment, from my experience Ticas are much more direct about expressing desires for sex. Quite refreshing, after the fiery hoops I jumped through in the U.S.

7. Fashion Sense: Costa Rican women just know what to wear. Have you ever seen so many girls who know what looks good on them? Wow!

6. Compassion: Ticas really know how to take care of a man. They are just so darn sweet and considerate.

5. Sanity: I really believe that women in the U.S. have been given so many options and conflicting messages of what it is to be a strong woman, that many are driven to near insanity. At least I can state this is absolutely the case of my last few ex’s. Ticas seem so much more grounded and comfortable with themselves. It’s refreshing.

4. Not Body Conscious: Latina women are so much more confident in their own skin. We have demanded such Playboy Centerfold-like perfection up North that even drop dead gorgeous American girls are anorexic. Not the case of Ticas, where even a size 10 is not afraid to wear a bikini. I think that’s 100 times sexier than a size 1 gringa who complains about her stretch marks. Ugh!

3. Not Overly Demanding: What does a gringa NOT want from a man these days? A man who’s wealthy yet not in love with work. A man who is tough and wild, yet honest and sensitive. Honestly, the ideal man that’s been portrayed for women in movies and TV just doesn’t exist. In my experience, Ticas have much more realistic expectations from men.

2. Sexy: There’s just something about the pure sensuality that Latinas seem to exude effortlessly. Ticas are no exception. They are not embarrassed or ashamed by utilizing sex appeal and seemed to have learned from birth what turns a man on. My lord, I’m sweating just thinking about it.

1. Accessibility: By and large, the most amazing thing about Costa Rican women is how easy they are to approach. Girls in the U.S. seem programmed to say NO, while a Tica three times as pretty will be happy to accept a drink, join you for a dance or offer her telephone number. It makes going out on the town an adventure, rather than a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure!
