Living in Costa Rica – Writing down your plans and goals.
Whatever you do in business and in life, it’s sensible to have written goals, to plan ahead, to have alternatives and back-ups and living in Costa Rica or any other developing country, you need to have a plan ‘B’ and maybe a plan ‘C’ too…
Costa Rica is a magnificent country and after living in ten different countries on three different continents around the world, I can’t imagine living anywhere else but, you never really know what’s going to happen next and writing down your plans and goals should help prepare you for most things.
Whenever you have something that is important to you, a particular product or professional service, make sure you have at least two suppliers so that when one inexplicably fails to deliver, you have a plan ‘B’ to fall back on and of course from a personal standpoint:
- Do you have an emergency supply of drinking water in the house?
- Do you have torches, spare batteries, candles and a comprehensive First Aid kit in the house?
- Do you have spare propane gas tanks for cooking? (I have always preferred gas for cooking not just because it’s more sensitive but you can still cook when there is no electricity.)
- Do you have a supply of long lasting foodstuffs in the pantry?
- For those of you on medications, do you have enough of those if your next few deliveries don’t arrive?
- Do you have enough cash in a safe place that would allow you to leave the country if you had some kind of emergency back home, when your credit card inexplicably doesn’t work and the banks are closed? Murphy’s Law applies in Costa Rica too …
A Harvard Business study showed some remarkable figures relating to goals and success. It found that:
- 83% of the population does not have goals.
- 14% of the population have unwritten goals, but only a plan in mind.
- 3% of the population have goals written down.
The study found that the 14% who have goals are 10 times more successful than those without goals. The 3% with written goals are 3 times more successful that the 14% with unwritten goals.
Clearly, a person is more likely to achieve a goal if it is written down and that would include creating written plans and goals for living happily in Costa Rica.
Life in the “less developed countries” (LDC) can be very satisfying indeed and if you and your family have your goals written down, have a written plan and are able to prepare for ‘what if’ problems, we know that you will be happier, healthier and better adjusted in life than the 86% of people that do not plan ahead.
