In the early 2000’s I moved from a small town in Washington State to New York City.

One of the most interesting discoveries of making that move was realizing how many friends and family from my small town still had the perception that Manhattan was this dangerous, dirty city, they envisioned how NYC was back in the 80’s full of panhandlers, homeless people and thugs, and failed to understand that it had improved dramatically.

That is the amazing part of having a reputation, good or bad, it can last for a long time.

Jaco Beach unfortunately sometimes falls into that category, Jaco of ten years ago is simply not what it is today.

While some might still refer to it as a crazy and dangerous party town, all it takes is a quick trip to discover why Jaco is quickly solidifying as the top beach town in Costa Rica and one of the hottest tourist destinations.

Currently commercial improvements can be seen all over, with new restaurants and stores popping up, as well as many establishments remodeling.

Walk down the main street and you’ll see new sidewalks and streetlights being added. There is a great buzz and energy with Jaco as locals are discovering that it offers amenities, amazing dining, and the best proximity to San Jose, just an hour drive.

Costa Ricans are now coming more frequently, stimulating the local economy and creating a consistent base of both local and foreign tourism.

I can’t tell you how often I hear people tell me they heard or read all sorts of negative things about Jaco prior to arriving, only to be surprised that they absolutely love the small surfing town.

I’m sure Jaco will continue to get its fair share of negative comments, but for those who have any doubt I encourage those who have never been to spend a couple days and see for themselves why many are choosing Jaco for both investments and retiring.

Next time you are in Costa Rica, make the call yourself and make a quick trip to Jaco Beach.
