The best chicken wings in the area are not in Jaco, but about an hour drive south, high in the hills of Manuel Antonio.

Ngo is a quaint and rather simple family owned Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant sitting right off the main road leading into the world famous national park. The menu is only one page, but is absolutely bursting with flavor and also offers exotic Asian beers like Tsingtao.

Not long ago, some friends and I stopped in for a few chilly Tsingtaos one hot afternoon after a surf competition at Playitas Beach. Khang, the owner, did not get angry with us for tracking in sand and treated us like part of the family.

We asked him to recommend some food with our beer, at which point, he insisted that the “Asian Style Chicken Wings” were the way to go if we’d never had them. We took his advice and let me tell you, the name falls miles short of describing his perfect mix of crispy, sweet and spicy Asian flavors.

He explained that it was best to keep the name vague in order to protect his secret mixture of special ingredients.

While Ngo is very much a diamond in the rough, Jaco itself is no wing desert. For those seeking a variety of wing flavors at a great price, look no further than Surf Dogs Bar for their daily special. Unlike your typical sports bar, Surf Dogs not only offers Buffalo and Barbecue flavored sauces, but also their own newly crafted sweet Asian specialty sauce.

Whether you decide to wash your lunch down with water, beer, or a frozen daiquiri, at 40 cents per wing, Surf Dogs is the ideal place to catch your favorite NFL, NBA and MLB teams on game day.

For American style wings with a more authentic Costa Rican feel, Soda Marea Alta also broadcasts sports; typically soccer matches involving Costa Rican National and club teams. Though Marea Alta offers the basic Buffalo and Sweet Barbecue sauces, it is the only place in town you can indulge in wings 24 hours a day.

Actually, Marea Alta is one of very few places open to eat after the bars close, so with Jaco’s vibrant nightlife and a side of sweet creamy Costa Rican natilla dipping sauce, Marea Alta is the perfect place to quell those afterhours cravings before calling it a night.
