It’s rare that an article brings tears to my eyes but the most recent issue of Current Biology magazine did just that in reading that there are 5-7 times more tigers in the world in zoo cages than there are living wild and free…

Once that sinks in, you can’t help but feel really, really sad, don’t you think?

Supposedly there only about 3,000 tigers surviving in their rapidly dwindling native habitats and between 15,000 – 20,000 in zoos and circuses with some owned as ‘pets.’

Over 250 years ago, the Scottish philosopher David Hume said that: “It is seldom that liberty of any kind is lost all at once.”

While tigers are magnificent creatures, they are not intellectually equipped to plan ahead as we destroy their natural habitats bit by bit leaving them with a dwindling amount of land on which they can try to survive.

But most of us are intellectually equipped to plan ahead and we are seeing many more people from ‘up North’ who are genuinely concerned about the direction in which their country is moving, and wish to have their plan B in Costa Rica in place in case things deteriorate further.

Our politicians create a lot of spin about freedom and security, but while our patriotic backs have been turned they have had a great deal of success in making us far less secure, and have quietly removed many of the freedoms bit by bit that we used to take for granted.

Over the past ten years, it has been proven that on thousands of occasions (2) our
government talking heads have lied to us with truly horrific consequences, but it’s still only a miniscule percentage of the general population that seem to understand this.

If that means that you have read everything you can and have decided to stay right where you are – terrific! As long as you are prepared. If that means that you have already bought your little finca somewhere in Costa Rica ‘just in case’ that’s great too but at least we are not like those poor tigers, we can’t say “We didn’t know what was going on…”
