“Hi. My name is Will Raap. I grew up in California, have lived in Vermont the last 30 years or so, built my business there, built my community there.

But during the winters, I would often come to Costa Rica because that’s where my wife’s family was from. So for the last 10 or 15 years, I’ve been involved in trying to make this part of Costa Rica in Guanacaste a better place to live for me and for people I know.

There are probably, I don’t know, 6 or 8, maybe 10 identified blue zones around the planet. These are places where longevity is the norm, where people live longer, healthier lives and science, medical science tries to understand this.

Some of the reasons for this are the water, the minerals in the soil, the food, the approach to life, how much stress you have. One of these blue zones is the Nicoya Peninsula where we are here in Costa Rica. I’ve been coming down here off and on for 30 years. Now I’m here for three or four months a year and I guarantee you I’m healthier and feel better here.

That’s partly because in Vermont where I lived the rest of the year, I would be under a couple of feet of snow right now. So here I can be outside. I can enjoy nature. I can have food that’s fresh and growing all year long. So I have access to that.

But there’s also something about being part of a natural system that’s alive, that’s vital. I don’t know what it is, whether it’s the water, the soil, the food, the exercise you get here. But you feel like you want to be part of something that is healthy. It makes your life more healthy.

That’s one of the things that also I think is unique about this area and it’s not part of where we are here, golfing communities, a Florida style condominium community, where you’re sort of trapped in a place. This is about getting out and enjoying the beach, enjoying the mountains, enjoying the wildlife.

We designed this in a place that was part of Costa Rica, not sequestered from Costa Rica. So the idea of the blue zone here, guaranteed you’re going to get some of whatever it is that makes this place a blue zone for the planet and helps people live long, healthy lives.

Whether or not that’s going to change your life, I don’t know, but I do know that being part of this place, being able to go walk the beach or walk the mountains or enjoy the birdlife or the wildlife, is something about that that enhances a sense of well-being.” Will Raap.

Will Raap has been visiting Costa Rica for 30 years with his wife whose family has been growing the best coffee in Costa Rica since the 19th century. He founded Gardener’s Supply Company in 1983, and the Intervale Foundation, a 20 year old non profit organization and national leader in sustainable agriculture and community renewal.

In 2003 Raap was the winner of the first annual Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility award for excellence in socially responsible business and in 2004 he was recognized as Entrepreneur of the Year by the US Small Business Administration.
