Retirement Living On The Central Pacific Coast. Jaco and other options Part II
Herradura however due to its basic geography allowing only main road in and out which the local town hall has not yet furnished with sufficient sidewalks and lack of beachfront land has not seen the extensive real estate development as Jaco.
For those out of the price range of the Los Suenos market, you can find single standing family homes in very tranquil neighbouhoods as well as a handful of small condominium developments catering to the mid range buyer. The beach in Playa Herradura has no waves and is used as a harbor for deep sea fishing fleets at the Los Suenos Marina.
Just 5kms south of Jaco is the surfer’s dream of Hermosa, host to the Billabong world surfing games of 2009 that brought a wave of tourists to the generally very laid back and quiet village. This area is a surfer’s paradise with consistent waves throughout the year. It is important to mention here that the currents in Playa Hermosa are very strong and are not ideal for swimming.
Visitors can visit the Playa Hermosa Wildlife Refuge, which protects the Olive Ridley sea turtles that come to nest here every year. For prospective buyers, this area provides a relatively undeveloped tranquil region where you can find at this time on the beach a community of homes in the $400K range and up as well as Mediterranean style home tucked into the valley at more affordable prices.
Due to the landscape and mountain side, ocean view lots and homes are also available, yet still within a short drive to the beach or even to Jaco where you would do all your shopping and go for entertainment. It really offers the best of both worlds.
Even further to the south is the long stretch of beach known as Esterillos. This town is located just 20 minutes south of Jaco and forty minutes north of Manuel Antonio, it is one of the more laid back and less developed beach towns on the Central Pacific coast.
There are enough conveniences in the area to live comfortably including a health clinic, school as well as restaurants including a pizzeria, beachfront bar and grill as well as small pulperias, where you can do some light shopping but for most of your heavy shopping you would need to come into Jaco.
The area is also quite rich in nature including mangroves, freshwater lakes and lagoons. The beach is quite long and is divided into three areas Esterillos Oeste, Centro and Este. These are mainly surfing beaches but on the first stretch of beach known as Esterillos Oeste are several rock formations that have formed natural tide pools just perfect for swimmers of all levels.
Esterillos Oeste is also one of the few beach towns with gentle sloping hills allowing for the homes in this area to have ocean and mountain views yet still be close to the beach. Do not expect to find in Esterillos a condominium market, they simply do not exist and the few condominium communities such as Del Pacifico and Monterey have not been very successful as most of the buyers in these areas are seeking more of a real Costa Rican feel and the independence of having their own home.
