Nuevo Arenal is a 1.5 hour drive from the beautiful new Daniel Oduber airport in Liberia and the nearly completed, uncongested 4 lane highway between Cañas and Liberia make it a pleasure to drive. Liberia airport is served by most of the major airlines in the US and Canada (Air Canada, American, Delta, Frontier, Jetblue, United, US Airways and Westjet) so there is seldom a need to go to San Jose, but if you do it is a 3.5 hour drive.
