Thanks for the Head Lice! More Spanish language mistakes.
After ten years of trying to speak Spanish, even with the nicest of intentions I still occasionally manage to make a total fool of myself…
As any man will tell you, the Ticas (the Costa Rican women) are not at all shy about showing their romantic interest in someone and yesterday I bumped into a woman who has regularly made it clear that she would like to spend some more ‘quality’ time with me.
In turn, I have always reminded her that I’m still with the same gal I’ve been dating for the last 10 years and don’t anticipate that changing any time soon.
As I left her with the usual peck on the cheek, I was trying to politely thank her for the “amorous compliments” but screwed it up royally although we both had quite a laugh.
In Spanish, a “flirtatious remark” or an “amorous compliment” is called a “piropo” but that little brain block of mine kicked in and instead of thanking her for her “piropos”, I thanked her for her “piojos” which are – unfortunately – head lice, those ‘orrible little critters that feed on blood from the scalp.
She’ll always remember me though!
