The Bluest River You Have Ever Seen & Tenorio Volcano in Costa Rica
A stone’s throw away from San Luis, and Tilaran in Guanacaste Costa Rica, in the opposite direction as the Arenal Volcano, is the Parque Nacional Volcan Tenorio, which is a part of the Arenal Tilaran Conservation Area.
The park gets its name from the tree ensconced Tenorio Volcano, which is actually a series of four peaks and two craters.
The upper elevations of this national reserve are lined with cloud forest, and the lower regions by rain forest. As the hiking trail here is only around three miles long, if you’re looking for anything but a day hike you should plan a trip somewhere more accommodating. That doesn’t mean, however, you should skip Volcano Tenorio.
While not an intense hike in duration, its quality is truly astonishing. The reservation is home to countless species of birds, as well as howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, pumas, peccaries, tapirs, and anteaters. The natural hot springs of the Barbollones are a welcome attraction, as well. But the crown jewel is the Rio Celeste, the natural beauty of which is powerful enough to make you pine for the simpler lifestyle of your ancestors.
The color of the Rio Celeste is a blue that I guarantee you’ve never before witnessed in a running body of water. It is the confluence of two separate rivulets, the Quebrada Agria and Rio Buenavista. Each stream contains colloidal suspensions of aluminosulfates; but each, alone, runs crystal clear.
The secret of just how the color of the sky came to exist in the waters of a river lies in the combination of two opposing acidities. When the more acidic Quebrada Agria coincides with the more neutral Rio Buenavista, their convergence causes each river’s aluminosulfates to clump together in larger amalgamations, which are capable of scattering light in just the right way.
Rio Celeste is truly one of the most beautiful places on the planet. This general area of Costa Rica is one of the most precious and protected green areas of the world which is why more and more people are coming to visit and live here.
This area of Costa Rica offers a perfect climate, rain forests, mountains, waterfalls, volcanoes, hot springs, an abundance of natural resources, rich fertile soils, and diverse nature and wildlife. The Arenal Tilaran Conservation area is one of the most naturally beautiful, safe, clean and happiest places on the planet to live, retire or vacation in.
Anyone considering a change of pace and lifestyle for a short time or a long time I highly recommend visiting the Lake Arenal and it’s surrounding areas.
