The Lake Arenal Brewing Company. No need to read this unless you love beer!

In a country known for its cloud forest lined ridges, its vaulted rain forest jungles, and its transcendental beaches, hotels that cater to the wandering traveler are a dime a dozen.

For those visiting the Arenal area, however, there is a little place that has made a name for itself, which is sure to please, where the common wayfarer can rest his head and enjoy a good meal and a tasty brew.

On a fifteen acre organic farm that grows everything from lemons to kale, the Lake Arenal Hotel and Brewing Company, about six kilometers from San Luis, is a hotel, microbrewery, and local hot spot for yoga classes, skateboarding, dining, and other activities. The hotel’s balconies offer serene views of over one hundred acres of jungle, as well as the tranquility of the expanse of the lake, itself.

With dramatic red-ochre pillars and colorful walls adorned with hand-painted frescos, the 21-room hotel overlooks hundreds of acres of Costa Rica’s protected jungle and the rainbow shores of beautiful Lake Arenal.  It’s closest neighbors are toucans and parrots, howler monkeys, sloths, armadillos and occasionally, wild cats such as the Puma Jaguarondi.

The only one of its kind in the area, The LAB’s microbrewery currently boasts two types of beer made in-house, the Paradise Pale Ale and the Jungle Dunkel. The Paradise is the more “hoppy” of the two. Made with fair degree of hops, this pale ale is a refreshing conclusion to day of hiking, kiteboarding or windsurfing, and is sure to quench your thirst. The Jungle Dunkel is a dark, German style beer, with a characteristic smooth finish and well rounded flavor.

In addition to crafting its own beers, The LAB also sponsors a program called EartH2O, which just last year hosted over 400 college students to learn more about sustainable forms of energy. Their course is around two weeks in duration, and provides students with the opportunity to learn in a hands-on atmosphere, as well as experience the cultural side of this breath-taking country.

The Lake Arenal Brewing Company is somewhat of a local treasure. It feels like it’s woven into the landscape. There is also a fun filled and fantastic skate park here for skateboard enthusiasts!
