The ‘Must Attend’ Charity Event. The Atenas Charity Chili Cook Off on February 9th
Come for the chili tasting, food, beer, wine, swimming, live music and a raffle that is second to none. Oh, and plenty of fun will be had by all — this promises to be our biggest and best chili event yet!
By attending you are partnering with us to raise money for Hogar de Vida, a local children’s home in Atenas. It was started by Tim and Dena Stromstad in 1994 to provide a healthy environment to children under ten years of age that come from varied backgrounds — abandoned, abused or orphaned.
Hogar de Vida provides a loving home by ensuring each child’s needs are met in all ways. The home relies heavily on personal donations or events such as the Atenas Charity Chili Cook Off — although they do receive funding from the government, it only covers a portion of their day-to-day expenses. A new campaign this year, “Koins for Kids” is becoming quite the conversation. We are asking all attendees to save their coins and bring them with you to put in a big display area and we’ll ring bells and hoop la and holler when the money drops! Bring it in a jar, a box, a suitcase — whatever!
This popular event has grown tremendously in seven years — originally a bet was established by a few gringo’s at Kay’s Gringo Postres about who had the best chili. The bet was on and they turned it into a fundraiser for Hogar de Vida.
From $200 raised that first year to a whopping $20,000 raised last year, the event has become a premier event in Atenas, partnering with not only local businesses to be sponsors, but going outward seeking sponsorship and donation support within Costa Rica and outside of Costa Rica.
The business support has been positively overwhelming and what started mostly as a gringo event, is gradually making its mark on both gringo’s and Tico’s.
So, mark that calendar and come join us on February 9th from 11am to 4pm to help choose the People’s Choice Award for your favorite chili — over 25 teams will be there vying for top honors.
