-
Amazing Climate.
When we made our first visit to Costa Rica our idea was to explore the country and purchase a beach property. We had the good fortune of staying in the Atenas area for a few days before making our way to the beach. The spring like climate of Atenas and the Central Valley with day time temperatures in the low to mid 80’s and night time low’s in the mid 60’s changed all that and we were sold on Atenas. I must admit, I love my long, lazy beach weekends.

Smiling, Happy People.
It does not matter how beautiful the country is, or how fresh the climate may be, if the locals are not warm and welcoming it is hard to fit in and feel at home. Costa Ricans are fun loving and friendly and always greet you with a smile and HOLA, making you feel like you belong here. I can walk down the street and I know everyone and everyone knows me, just like in the town where I came from. That is when you know you are home!
-
Stunning Views.
Every morning when I wake up, before my feet hit the ground, I look out the sliding glass door of my bedroom to see the most spectacular view of lush green mountains and the Pacific ocean in the distance. I have the added bonus of watching hummingbirds and butterflies dart in and out of the blossoms in my gardens, searching for their morning nectar.

Fresh, Wholesome Fruit and Vegetables
If you want to see farm fresh produce in abundance all you need to do is go to the weekly “Feria” or Farmers Market in downtown Atenas. The selection of freshly picked fruits and vegetables is beyond compare, and by North American standards, cheap! In addition, the ground here in Costa Rica is so fertile, you can grow almost anything. This past year we planted a large garden with all the things we had been missing such as collard greens, okra and black eye peas.
-
Location, Location, Location.
Atenas has the three most important things in real estate; LOCATION! We are conveniently located 30 minutes to San Jose, 20 minutes to Santa Ana and Escazu where you find world class shopping and medical facilities, 30 minutes to the Juan SantaMaria International Airport and only 45 minutes to the Pacific coast with palm tree lined beaches and flocks of screeching scarlet macaws.
-
Sense of Community.
Atenas has an amazing sense of community among the locals and expats. We all live in harmony and come together for the support and benefit of the community. There are many social groups and charitable organizations allowing everyone to be involved and proactive leaving a positive impact on Atenas.
-
Diversity of Nature.
It is no secrete that Costa Rica is a dynamic little country with 12 distinct micro climates that allow for a wide range of flora and fauna. Atenas shares in this diversity due to it’s location and range in elevation from 680 feet above seal level in Rio Grande to just under 4,000 feet above sea level in Estanquillos.
-
Cultural Nuances.
It’s the subtle differences in the culture that I love about Costa Rica and it’s people. Where else in the world could you call someone “gordo” or “fat” and it be a term of endearment? That every year along with Christmas comes, tamales, “the Christmas winds” and Zapote? That drinking a local beer (Imperial) the way the locals do is over a glass of ice? And that you always greet your friends with a “Pura Vida Mae”!
-
Inner Peace.
Living in Costa Rica has brought me joy and happiness unlike I have ever experienced in my life. I have found an inner peace here, a real connection with nature. I feel at one with our mother earth. I feel complete.
-
Lifestyle.
I have a lifestyle that I would be hard pressed to find or be able to afford in many other areas of the world. I am surrounded by unprecedented natural beauty, have an abundance of wholesome food sources at my fingertips and have access to affordable, world class health care. If I choose I can have a cook, maid and gardener, a luxury that I could never have afforded in the States. Most importantly I have freedom, liberty and a peace of mind, there commodities that money cannot buy.
The AARP Ranks Atenas as…One of “The Best Places to Retire Abroad.”
