The average net income for a private practitioner in 2013 was $180,950 for a general practitioner and $283,900 for a specialist.

The average gross billings for specialist dentists in private practice in the USA are more lucrative:

• Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons = $1,200,000
• Endodontists = $650,000
• Orthodontists and Dentofacial Orthopedists = $850,000
• Pediatric Dentists = $800,000
• Periodontists = $650,000
• Prosthodontists = $733,370
